30 March 2007
Milan International Film Festival

We had the European premiere in Milan, Italy (http://miff.it) The theater was centrally located in the city (in fact, it was called Centrale theater), good sized crowd and the Italians totally cracked up at the Paparazzi and Pancrazio scenes.. Subtitling seemed decent although I don't speak Italian of course. Stanley Cuba also plays at Faux Film Fest on the west coast this Friday. The Milan film fest has definitely grown since Ari and I screened other films here two years ago. I met the director of Who Killed the Electric Car?, and John Irving (British director who made Dogs of War, a '70s classic war film set in Africa). Opening night film was "4 minutes", a stunning German film about a piano prodigy in prison and her teacher. George Clooney has been supposedly sighted, (he has a house at nearby lake Como).

In September, Stanley Cuba was selected for IFP Rough Cuts, lead by Filmmaker Magazine editor and longtime NYC indie producer Scott Macauley (Gummo, Raising Victor Vargas). At the lab, we received valuable mentorship from Alan Oxman (Editor - Happiness), Arianna Bocco (Sales Agent - Gersh Agency) and Tracy McKnight (Music Supervisor - BMI). More info here.

We made several important connections for the film and hopefully this will yield some fruit in the coming months. IFP market and film week followed immediately afterwards - a nonstop swirl of panels, parties, premiers, and general hot air. We bonded, we schmoozed, we got all like, existential on the subway when it was all over.

I recently heard from Sue Corcoran of Von Piglet productions in Seattle. She has a new film coming out called Circus Of Infinity. Check it out on YouTube - wild stuff!  I learned a lot working for Sue - she has a great visual style and an uncompromising vision.
